Seminar on microplastics, 8 November, Malmö, Sweden

On November 8, an IWA Sweden seminar on microplastics was held in Malmö. The seminar presented new international knowledge about microplastics and its presence in water, wastewater and sludge. The question of what happens to microplastics in sewage treatment plants and in the field of sludge spreading on arable land. One conclusion is that we need more knowledge about microplastics in order to make the right decisions on how to solve the problems.

“We’re happy to be able to gather so many experts within the field with such broad skills,” said HB Wittgren, one of the research leaders at Swedish Water Research. The idea is to contribute to greater understanding of the causes but also solutions to microplastics problems.

The seminar – in English – attracted great interest from both Swedish and international visitors. The seminar gathered 150 persons from a wide range of fields: the municipal water and wastewater organizations, authorities, researchers, research institutes, companies etc.

The organizers of the seminar were IWA Sweden, the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management, Swedish Water and Waste Water Association and Sweden Water Research. The seminar is held at Quality Hotel View in Hyllie, Malmö.

The day after the seminar, Thursday 9 November, Sweden Water Research organized a workshop for researchers in the field, with the purpose of identifying important questions for further research.
