PhD candidate investigating the sources of microplastic pollution

Emma Fältström is a PhD candidate at Sweden Water Research and at the division of Environmental Technology and Management at Linköping University. In November 2020 she defended her licentiate thesis “Towards the Control of Microplastic Pollution in Urban Waters”.

The thesis is about sources of microplastics in urban wastewater and stormwater, and what possible solutions there are to mitigate the flows of microplastics from urban areas to receiving waterways. Emma now continues her research to understand more about sources of microplastic pollution and the contribution of microplastics from urban waters to the Baltic Sea in the project FanpLESStic-Sea. The possibilities to influence the flows of microplastics and mitigate emissions are also investigated, as well as different urban actors’ responsibility and possibility to impact the flows.
