Summary of the 1st SCSSB

On October 11-12, Testbed Ellinge organised the 1st Swedish Conference on Sewage Sludge Biochar in Malmö. The conference attracted 122 people from 14 different countries.

A total of 32 different speakers were on stage. Six companies presented their pyrolysis technologies. On October 13, the testbed organised another study visi,t together with AquaGreen, to the Fårevejle Wastewater Treatment Plant in Denmark where they have installed a full-scale steam dryer and pyrolysis for sewage sludge. The study visit attracted 55 people, almost all of whom had attended the conference.

The content of the conference collected current knowledge about sludge biochar from many different points of view such as pyrolysis techniques, experiences from full and pilot scale, characterisation of sludge biochar, use of sludge biochar as fertiliser and/or filter material, market aspects and system analyses of sludge pyrolysis implementation. The conference ended with a panel debate between the technology suppliers.

Perhaps the hottest topic areas during the days were degradation of PFAS, availability of the phosphorus in the sludge biochar and the energy balance during drying and pyrolysis.

In addition to interesting and good presentations, the audience was very active in asking questions to the oral presentations. We as organisers received good feedback for the content and organisation of the conference. See full programme here

We will organise the 2nd Swedish Conference on Sewage Sludge Biochar (2nd SCSSB) in October 2024.

Study visit participants listening intently to AquaGreen’s CEO Henning Schmidt-Petersen.
